Shaun Of The Dead star Simon Pegg has just wrapped work on Mission: Impossible 8, highly likely to be the franchise capper and end to the movie series. This means it is the end of his time as Benji Dunn. He said in an Instagram post:
“I just wrapped my last day on Mission Impossible and said a farewell to everybody. And we started shooting the first part of this story in September 2020, and here we are in July 2024. What a journey has been. And what a f—ing incredible spectacle this next film is going to be, I’m so excited for you to see it. But until then, Benji Dunn signing off.”
While not part of the official publicity for Mission: Impossible 8 yet, he has also given an interview to The Hollywood Reporter. In that interview, the talk turned to his work with Edgar Wright, particularly the “Cornetto Trilogy” of Shaun Of The Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World’s End.
They asked Pegg if a sequel to Shaun of the Dead could ever happen, or a reboot:
“I mean, Universal owns it. If they choose to reboot it, then they can if they want I guess. Although Edgar and I would be incensed.”
Why would they be so upset with a reboot?
“There’s so much of our own heart and soul in that film. If someone was to reboot it, it would be a cynical and exploitative exercise. I would hope that people are in love with our Shaun enough to resist a reboot. Gary King [The World’s End] as well, that was a lot about my own alcoholism. A really personal film.”
He accepts that this could be hypocritical of him:
“I’m a big fan of sequels. Some of my favorite films are sequels: Empire Strikes Back, Aliens. I’m in a couple of film franchises which repeat and reboot, and it’s not that I decry sequels in any way, but I think some stories end. Some stories have a beginning, a middle and an end. If you were to see Shaun again, if the zombies came back, there’s just not a story to tell it.”
In the same interview, Pegg teases that he and Edgar Wright are planning to work together again as soon as their schedules allow, and they have started talking about what they could do.
