Superman Begins. Young Superman. The New Adventures Of Superboy. These are the titles some wags online are throwing around regarding DC Studios’ upcoming Superman: Legacy. These references come from the knowledge that the movie will feature a Clark Kent relatively early in his career at the Daily Planet. James Gunn seems to be keen to set the record straight.
“I was never making a ‘young Superman’ movie, just a Superman movie!’”.
This is actually true. Henry Cavill was 40. David Corenswet is 30 years old. However, he is actually a few months older than Cavll was when he made Man Of Steel. So younger, now, but not younger than Cavill’s Clark Kent.
While it will focus on an earlier part of Superman’s life it will not be an origin story, so Gunn clearly feels the Young Superman label is unfair. The movie will also feature Lex Luthor, Lois Lane, and an appearance from superhero collective The Authority.
When questions were also asked about the number of other characters in the movie, and if this will distract from Superman, Gunn also had something to say about that:
“I don’t understand this fear. There are less characters than in 40-Year-Old Virgin. Did you think Steve Carell got enough time?”
Lex Luthor and The Authority are yet to be cast, and the current strikes mean progress is sure to be stalled on the entire process and on a lot of the aspects of pre-production. Superman: Legacy is scheduled to begin filming in early 2024 ahead of a July 11th, 2025 release.
