An interesting rumor has swept the internet in the last 24 hours, thanks to a posting by “scooper” DanielRPK. According to his report, Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios are holding differing views over what the tone of the next Spider-Man movie should be.

Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige and star Tom Holland want more of a grounded story for the next film after the multiverse story told in Spider-Man: No Way Home. They favor bringing in Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin as a villain.

Sony Pictures, who we know are not the brightest, have seen the Spider-Man: No Way Home box office receipts and deploying the standard Hollywood mentality of “Monkey See / Monkey Do” want to bring back Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield all over again and go even bigger this time with more multiverse. Therefore completely failing to understand that the novelty value, plus the goodwill felt by audiences towards Garfield and Maguire, is a one-shot deal.

Marvel was said to have a story in development for the film, but it was paused due to the strikes.

Madame Web is out shortly and that is rumored to include Spider-Man links and Easter eggs. Spider-Man: No Way Home made $1.92 billion worldwide on a budget of $200 million.
