Move over Wicked. If you want to talk about defying gravity, then you need to learn from Meg 2: The Trench. The Jason Statham-led prehistoric shark sequel has overcome terrible reviews, a weak start, and general domestic apathy to be North of $300 million and still swimming. Overseas box-office, including a massive take in China, are the main culprits.

The Meg: Part 3 is now almost certain to happen and original series author Steve Alten is being proved right. He told us when we spoke to him that this could be a billion-dollar franchise. It is North of $800 million and counting. Wrenage didn’t like it when he reviewed it. Outposter opinion was divided.

The-Meg

Now, those of you who are yet to see it can get all caught up, perhaps while drinking heavily in the comfort of your own living room. Meg 2: The Trench is coming to digital today!

Here in the West, where box office receipts have slowed, the movie will appear right now on VOD services like iTunes and Amazon as both a rental or a PVOD purchase. I own the first one as a digital download. Will my OCD / anal completeness syndrome require that I also purchase this? Why does “Anal Completeness Syndrome” sound like the kind of DVD company that re-releases remastered editions of the kind of movies Shawn likes to watch? Am I going off on a tangent?

Focus! For those of you who still like physical media as the man can’t delete it, Meg 2: The Trench will arrive on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD on October 24th.

The third novel in the Meg series involved a retired Jonas Taylor being tagged to take part in an ocean-based reality show, and an enemy from his past using this event as a chance to get even with him. Other storylines in the novels that could be mined for another sequel involve a Dubai-based Emerati prince trying to build the world’s greatest aquarium and yet more escapees from the trench.
