Chernin Entertainment and King Features are teaming up to bring Popeye back to the screen.

They are currently shopping for a studio partner to distribute the project.

The old favorite has appeared in numerous incarnations. The spinach addicted fan of vegetable fuelled violence and tattoo enthusiast first appeared in comic strips in the late 1920s.

He was the star of many different cartoon shows on television, from shorts to anthology based shows, and even in CGI form.

Popeye

This project is a live-action movie. This will be the second time on the big screen. The 1980 Robert Altman-directed film starred Robin Williams as Popeye and Shelley Duvall as Olive Oyl.

That was a notorious flop that was savaged by critics at the time, but has found its reputation growing over time and it is fondly regarded today.

Screenwriter Michael Caleo (Sexy Beast, The Family) is creating the scripts.

Popeye is historically interesting as it is one of the earliest characters to be mass merchandised and also has one of the first commercial tie-ins, in this case McCall Farms Spinach.
