Not this year, unfortunately! In an unconventional move, Focus Features has announced a December 25th 2024 release date for Nosferatu. This is the highly anticipated remake from The Lighthouse, The Northman, and The Witch director Robert Eggers.

Bill Skarsgard, Lily-Rose Depp, Nicolas Hoult, Willem Dafoe, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, and Simon McBurney star in the film. It wrapped production at Barrandov Studio in Prague earlier this year. Rumors from the set were that it was a good experience, but the shoot was highly complex and unconventional. What delights will Eggers have to reveal?

The original F.W. Murnau 1922 feature is cinematic legend. It is in a German Expressionism cinematic style. That was itself remade by Werner Herzog, starring Klaus Kinski as the title character. There was also the well-received side movie Shadow Of The Vampire. This new version is said to be in color and will follow a 19th-century European Romanticism style.

The original Nosferatu was produced by Prana Film and as an unauthorized and unofficial adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Various names and other details were changed from the novel as a defense against copyright infringement, however, the original German intertitles acknowledged Dracula as the source. As a result, Stoker’s heirs sued over the adaptation, and a court ruling ordered all copies of the film to be destroyed. Luckily, several prints of Nosferatu survived and the film came to be regarded as an influential masterpiece of cinema and the horror genre.

According to the blurb, it will tell the same story of obsession between a haunted young woman in 19th-century Germany and the ancient Transylvanian vampire who stalks her, bringing untold horror with him. Peter Kujawski, Chairman of Focus Features, said:

“The audacious filmmaking of Robert Eggers is always a gift for fans, and we can promise that his Nosferatu is planning quite the Christmas feast.”

So who had a bloodthirsty vampire on their letter to Santa?
