Penn In For Nicole Smith Biopic

Any Outposter of a certain age will be familiar with Anna Nicole Smith. She was an American model, actress, and television personality.

Smith started her career as a Playboy magazine centerfold in May 1992 and won the title of 1993 Playmate of the Year. She later modeled for fashion companies, including Guess, H&M, and Heatherette. She was potentially a blonde bombshell in the mould of Marilyn Monroe. Then it all went wrong.

After promising roles in The Hudsucker Proxy and The Naked Gun 33 1/2rd: The Final Insult, her private life began to overshadow her career. Her marriage to 89-year-old billionaire  J. Howard Marshall resulted in speculation that she married him for his money, which she denied. Following Marshall’s death in 1995, Smith began a lengthy legal battle over a share of his estate. This made it all the way to the US Supreme Court.

On February 8, 2007, Smith was found unresponsive in her room at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida. Her death was ruled an accidental drug overdose.

Now, Harold and Kumar and Designated Survivor actor Kal Penn is set to star in Trust Me, I’m a Doctor, This movie tells the story of the final days Nicole Smith leading up to that overdose.

It is based on Dr. Sandeep Kapoor’s 2017 book of the same name. He was Smith’s pain-medication doctor who was implicated in the wrongful death trials following her passing.

Written and directed by Thane Economou (The Wedding Party), the project is the second to examine Smith in recent times. Hurricanna recently wrapped. That stars Sylvia Hoeks as Smith and Holly Hunter as Smith’s therapist.

Penn and Dan Spilo are executive producing Truse Mem I’m A Doctor which will shoot in the spring in Toronto. A casting process is underway to find an actress to play Smith.
