Glen Powell is something of a rising star in Hollywood. Following his antagonist role in Top Gun: Maverick, then Anyone But You snared more than $100 million. Not bad going for a rom-com. Next up is the John Patton Ford-directed revenge thriller Huntington.

In that, Powell will play Becket Redfellow, the heir to a multi-billion-dollar fortune who will stop at nothing to get what he thinks he deserves. According to the notes, it is inspired by the classic Alec Guinness-led British 1949 comedy Kind Hearts and Coronets. A24 is in the running for the distribution deal for that.

Top-Gun-3

Out on the promotion trail for these various projects, Powell gave an interview to Variety and was asked about the status of a third Top Gun movie that would see him return alongside Miles Teller and Tom Cruise. That movie was surprisingly a lot further along in its development than anyone had thought. He said:

“There is going to be some fun stuff being announced soon…but it was confidential to me. I talk to [Joseph] Kosinski, Cruise, and Jerry [Bruckheimer] all the time. There is stuff happening and it sounds very exciting. I don’t know when I’ll be going back…I’m sure there is a jet waiting for me sometime in the future.”

Powell also has Richard Linklater’s Hit Man, and Lee Isaac Chung’s Twisters due out this year.

2022s Top Gun: Maverick was massively successful at the box office. It grossed $1.496bn worldwide. That movie had huge amounts of goodwill from audiences excited to return to Top Gun after 35 years. Can a threequel garner the same level of interest?
