I had to double-check what Thunderbolts was. When I first saw this story, I thought it was a sequel to Black Widow, but that couldn’t be the case, not even Disney is that desperate, are they?

Well, shut my mouth! Disney is that desperate and yes, they are making a quasi-sequel to that completely forgettable Black Widow movie. Thunderbolts is now in production and Florence Pugh shared a sneak peek.

She’s not giving much away, but I can’t imagine the script is overly complex. The story for the Thunderbolts is:

A group of supervillains are recruited to go on missions for the government.

Again, shut my mouth, this is a totally new and original idea. Most of the cast from Black Window is back, and some others from the MCU. Joining Pugh is Rachel Weisz, David Harbour, Sebastian Stan, Wyatt Russell, Hannah John-Kamen, Julia Lloyd-Dreyfus and Olga Kurlenko.

You have Ava from Ant-Man and the Wasp, Bucky from The Winter Solider, and John Walker from The Falcon and the Winter Solider. At least they are trying to be consistent.

Thunderbolts is being directed by Jake Schreier and is written by Joanna Calo, Lee Sung Jin, and Eric Pearson. It is based on the original characters created by Kurt Busiek. There’s only one woman’s name there, is that even allowed now?

After A Few Bombs

Marvel is trying to recover from a few hiccups. I say hiccups, it’s more like a big belch with a bit of sick in it. The Marvels, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and The Eternals all failed to hit the mark both creatively and financially. The Marvels had a budget of nearly $275 million, yet the movie barely made back $190 million.

Thunderbolts

According to reports, this whole next phase of the MCU, both on streaming and in theaters, is undergoing a retooling. Daredevil: Born Again was completely halted and restarted effectively from the ground up.  Captain America: Brave New World has had extensive reshoots after poor test screenings. Imagine everyone’s shock?

Thunderbolts is due out in May 2025. You’ll find us all here at Last Movie Outpost on the edge of our seats.
