Ready Player One was a good idea on paper, but it didn’t gel with all the fans of the book. It did go on to make just over $500 million at the box office, so, of course, there’s money to be made from a sequel.

Warner Bros are very keen, as it was great for advertising.

The original movie had cameos from their IP, including Freddy Kruger, King Kong, Batman, The Iron Giant, the twins from The Shining and many more. They probably won’t have that victim of #MeToo, Pepe LePew.

Ready-Player

Steven Spielberg directed the original Ready Player One but will only be producing the sequel.

He told Showbix411, that the sequel is in the “discovery phase” and they are trying to figure out what to do next to move the movie forward.

The original movie had the plot:

“The film is set in 2045, with the world on the brink of chaos and collapse. But the people have found salvation in the OASIS, an expansive virtual reality universe created by the brilliant and eccentric James Halliday (Mark Rylance).

When Halliday dies, he leaves his immense fortune to the first person to find a digital Easter egg he has hidden somewhere in the OASIS, sparking a contest that grips the entire world.

When an unlikely young hero named Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) decides to join the contest, he is hurled into a breakneck, reality-bending treasure hunt through a fantastical universe of mystery, discovery and danger.”

I’m going to say this, Spielberg hasn’t had a good ‘summer blockbuster’ since the first Jurassic Park.

Jurassic Park is one of those perfect movies, where everything works, including some brilliant direction. His other ‘summer blockbusters’, The BFG, War of the Worlds, The Adventures of Tintin, have all been pretty much forgettable. I don’t think I even finished The BFG.

Having him not come back for a Ready Player One sequel, I think, is a good thing. He doesn’t have that magic anymore.
