Sometimes, just sometimes, Zack Snyder is just the Zackiest Snyder he can be. Like right now, when he announces the director’s cut of a movie that only just dropped its first trailer. Rebel Moon only launched launch its early publicity about 36 hours ago, and already he’s Zacking up all over the Snydering place about his own version of the as-yet unreleased two-film sci-fi epic.
Giving an interview to Netflix’s official news site – Tudum – he Snydered away to confirm that a director’s cut for at least the first movie is coming, and it will be big!
“The director’s cut is close to an hour of extra content, so I think it’s a legitimate extended universe version. You really get to see a lot. It’s just more painted-in all the way.
The director’s [cut] is a settle-in deep dive, which I have notoriously done throughout my career. I don’t know how I got into this director’s cut thing, but what I will say about it is that, for me, the director’s cuts have always been something I had to fight for in the past and nobody wanted it.It was this bastard child that I was always trying to put together because they felt like there was a deeper version.
And with Netflix, we shot scenes just for the director’s cut. So in that way, it’s really a revelation because it gives that second kick at the can for big fans, like a real discovery that they would not [otherwise] get. I’m really excited about it!”
The two-part adventure, now named A Child of Fire, and The Scargiver, will tell the story of Kora, a mysterious young woman who recruits warriors from neighboring planets to rebel against a tyrannical empire known as the Imperium that’s invaded their peaceful colony moon.
Star Wars, Dune, and Avatar references were all spotted in the much-discussed trailer. There will be both R-rated versions and PG-13 regular cuts of the film available, which is the second Zackiest thing we have heard this week.
Rebel Moon Part 1: A Child of Fire will have a limited theatrical run ahead of arrival on Netflix on December 22nd. Rebel Moon Part 2: The Scargiver will be released on the streamer on April 19th, 2024.
