The original Sexy Beast motion picture starred Ray Winstone, Ben Kingsley, and Ian McShane. It landed Kingsley an Oscar nomination. It remains well-regarded and was voted the 15th-best British film of all time by Total Film.
In the movie, Gary “Gal” Dove (Winstone), is a retired criminal visited by a sociopathic gangster Logan (Kingsley), who demands that he take part in a bank robbery. The Sexy Beast series serves as the prequel to Jonathan Glazer’s 2000 movie and traces the origins of best friends Gal Dove (James McArdle) and Don Logan (Emun Elliott), two thieves navigating East London’s volatile criminal underworld during the 1990s.
The duo will cross paths with DeeDee Harrison (Sarah Greene), an adult star who begins a love affair with Gal, and Teddy Bass (Stephen Moyer), a crime boss who recruits Gal and Don to work for his empire.
The cast is built out by Tamsin Greig, Eliza Bennett, Ralph Brown, John Dagleish, Peter Ferdinando, Nitin Ganatra, Robbie Gee, Alice Bailey Johnson, Paul Kaye, David Kennedy, Cally Lawrence, Clea Martin, Nicholas Nunn, Julian Rhind-Tutt, and Lex Shrapnel.
Michael Caleo (The Sopranos) is the showrunner and executive producer, so it could have a pedigree. Caleo is also the writer. JC Acosta, David Caffrey, Nicole Clemens, Alastair Galbraith, Louis Mellis, Michael Scheel, David Scinto, and Antony Smith are the other executive producers.
The series is due to premiere on January 25th on the Paramount+ service.
