If you Google Eric R. Roth you find yourself looking at one of the most impressive filmographies in Hollywood. The American screenwriter is the man behind the pen for movies like Forrest Gump, The Insider, Munich, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, A Star Is Born, and Dune. He has been nominated six times for the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay and won for Forrest Gump .

He also earned a Best Picture nomination for producing Mank. Alongside working with Villeneuve on two Dune movies, he was also a writer with Martin Scorsese on Killers of the Flower Moon. It turns out Villeneuve  and Roth have been working together quietly on something that is a passion project for both of them

The well-regarded A Script Apart podcast featured Roth as a guest where he spilled about the project. When asked what it was about, all he would say was:

“…space and time…”

The speculation is that this is Villeneuve’s other passion project, alongside Dune – adapting Arthur C. Clarke’s Rendezvous with Rama.

Rama

Villeneuve has expressed an interest in making this adaptation for many years. In the novel, set in the 2130s, a 50-by-20-kilometer (31 by 12 mile) cylindrical alien starship enters the Solar System. The story is told from the point of view of a group of human explorers who intercept the ship in an attempt to unlock its mysteries. The novel won both the Hugo and Nebula awards upon its release and is regarded as one of the cornerstones in Clarke’s bibliography.

As a group of human explorers intercepts the ship, their attempts to unlock its mysteries while making humanity’s first contact with an alien species present challenges and even more questions.

Dune: Part Two is out in March next year and full publicity for that will kick off in the New Year. Maybe more will be known about their plans from that publicity tour.
