As they say in the mountains of Italy, mettici dentro una ragazza e rendila zoppa. For that is what they are doing with the sequel to 1993s Cliffhanger.
Back in May there was much rejoicing when it was announced that Sylvester Stallone was to reprise his iconic role as Search-and-Rescue mountain climber Gabe Walker. The original remains a highly rewatchable classic of the genre to this day, that scored $255 million at the box-office.. Then we remembered…
We remembered it was current year, and that Hollywood is mostly populated by fucking idiots.
Sometimes you just have to get to the bathroom, fast.
Thus proving that there is absolutely nothing that Hollywood won’t completely ruin, comes the outline for this Cliffhanger sequel and it is almost exactly as you would have expected:
“Gabe is now living in the Dolomites where he runs an exclusive mountain lodge. When Gabe and a high-profile client are taken hostage during an adventurous weekend trip, his daughter has to use all her climbing skills to outwit the kidnappers, triggering a battle of life and death.”
Because nothing says “good time at the movies” like seeing your heroes sidelined and upstaged by a spunky girlboss who has the answers to absolutely everything without any kind of challenge or growth.
An article in Screen also says that there has been a change of director, with Jean-Francois Richet (Plane, the Assault on Precinct 13 remake) now in the big chair to replace Ric Roman Waugh (Kandahar, Angel Has Fallen, Greenland).
Mark Bianculli (The Good Neighbor, Hunters) is the writer on the project which is a German-British co-production. The last time they were involved in anything together it was World War II, so we have much to look forward to.
Black Magic Films, Supernix, and Original Films are providing the money laundering facilities… sorry, we mean the financial muscle. The project will shoot mainly in the famous Italian mountain region of Bavaria, Germany in the Penzing Studios right in the center of Munich.
Lars Sylvest, Thorsten Schumacher, Neal H. Moritz, Toby Jaffe, Philipp Kreuzer, and Joe Neurauter produce.
