Superman wrapped filming in July and entered what is sure to be a lengthy post-production period. So how long until the very first cut is ready? The “assembly cut”, as it is known. This is the rough first edit, pulled together largely by the director, that serves as a base ahead of any further editing.
According to director James Gunn in a conversation on Threads, this assembly cut of Superman is not only complete, but he completed it a while ago.
Now rumors are swirling that we will get a teaser before the end of the year, with the release planned for July next year.
More and more will slowly be revealed from the movie as the run-in commences, and yesterday came the first look at a character that hasn’t been mentioned much so far – Krypto. According to Gunn, this iteration was based on his own dog, Ozu, who he adopted while writing the screenplay:
“Krypto was inspired by our dog Ozu, who we adopted shortly after I started writing Superman. Ozu, who came from a hoarding situation in a backyard with 60 other dogs & never knew human beings, was problematic to say the least. He immediately came in & destroyed our home, our shoes, our furniture – he even ate my laptop.
It took a long time before he would even let us touch him. I remember thinking, ‘Gosh, how difficult would life be if Ozu had superpowers?’ – and thus Krypto came into the script & changed the shape of the story as Ozu was changing my life. What better time to debut the not-so-good-good-boy Krypto than #AdoptAShelterDog month. Btw, Ozu today, is, fairly often, a very good boy.”
As part of the reveal, Gunn released a production art image teasing the character:
Superman stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent/The Man of Steel, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Isabel Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern Guy Gardner, Edi Gathegi as Mr. Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, and Milly Alcock as Supergirl.
The rumored plot involves Superman being early in his superhero career, in a world where other superheroes exist. His approach to heroism is guided by his upbringing in Smallville, even as he struggles to reconcile this with both his Kryptonian heritage and the somewhat less-than-clean-cut behavior of other heroes who are operating in the open.
Superman will be released in cinemas on July 11th 2025.
