Very sad news just breaking in Hollywood. Outlets are reporting that Carl Weathers, who starred as Apollo Creed in the first four Rocky films, has passed away.
The actor, who starred in Predator, The Mandalorian, Happy Gilmore, Action Jackson and dozens of other films and TV shows, died Thursday, his family announced. He was 76.
They said in a statement:
“We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Carl Weathers,” his family said in a statement. “He died peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, February 1st, 2024. … Carl was an exceptional human being who lived an extraordinary life. Through his contributions to film, television, the arts and sports, he has left an indelible mark and is recognized worldwide and across generations. He was a beloved brother, father, grandfather, partner, and friend.”
Apollo Creed remains a truly exceptional character. What could have been a one dimensional villain was more complex and nuanced.
Never a “bad guy” but a challenge turned ally for Rocky Ballboa. Weathers performance stands out in all of the Rocky movies.
He had recently turned his hand successfully to directing, with episodes of The Mandalorian under his belt.
Reports say he passed away peacefully in his sleep.
