The biopic Bob Marley: One Love once again ruled the box office. Before anyone started celebrating, it was a pretty desperate-looking box office.
One Love made $13.5 million, a decline of 53% decline from its first week. Not a bad haul, especially when you consider that the movie had a budget of $70 million and has made $71.1 million domestically, followed by $120 million worldwide.
The anime film Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba — To the Hashira Training (no, me neither) came in second with $11.5 million. This is apparently a sequel to another movie I have absolutely no knowledge of or interest in.
The faith-based Hilary Swank drama Ordinary Angels came in third with $6.2 million. It will barely register a ripple outside of the US.
Madame Web already collapsed to fourth with $6 million, down 61% from its opening weekend. This is $77 million globally against an $80 million budget. First Argylle, now this. It is only February and there have already been two notable failures.
Migration was fifth with $3 million, taking the total to $268 million worldwide. Nobody will be upset with that at the studio.
Ethan Coen’s comedy thriller Drive-Away Dolls vanished down in 8th. It scored just $2.5 million and a terrible CinemaScore at a “C”. It is an R-rated queer crime tale. Once again it has seemed that Hollywood has over-expected performance based on its own worldview. Coen had hoped it would be the first in a trilogy. Our survey says:
Overall domestic box office for the weekend was down 18% from 2023. That is absolutely terrible for a post-pandemic year and reflects the total lack of blockbuster material at the same time as customer viewing habits have shifted. All eyes now look to Dune: Part Two later this week to see if cinema can be saved by scope and scale.
