The Xenomorph is back, and this time it aims to hiss and probably lunge at the camera with its tongue puncher. The teaser for Alien: Romulus has arrived.
According to Wikipedia and history nerds…
Romulus was the legendary founder and first king of Rome. Various traditions attribute the establishment of many of Rome’s oldest legal, political, religious, and social institutions to Romulus and his contemporaries. Although many of these traditions incorporate elements of folklore, and it is not clear to what extent a historical figure underlies the mythical Romulus, the events and institutions ascribed to him were central to the myths surrounding Rome’s origins and cultural traditions.
What does this mean for the Alien franchise? If I had to guess, perhaps the Xenomorphs will wear laurels this time. That should freshen the franchise up.
This go around, Fede Alvarez is in charge of injecting life into the Alien Universe, which has been a bit maligned in recent years, despite the return of Ridley Scott on Prometheus and Covenant. Alvarez is known for his work on the Don’t Breathe franchise and riding the coattails of other IPs like Evil Dead, Texas Chainsaw Massacre and even From Dusk till Dawn.
The official premise of Alien: Romulus is thus…
Set between the events of Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986), the story sees “a group of young people on a distant world, who find themselves in a confrontation with the most terrifying life form in the universe.”
Maybe we will get King Aliens this time since Queen Aliens are a bit passe. According to Alien lore, such things sort of exist in the form of Praetorian Aliens. Accurately laying out the details of this would require more Google-Fu than I can currently devote to the subject.
Originally, Alien: Romulus was set to premiere on Hulu. Someone must have grander ambitions, as it is now set for a theater release August 16, 2024.
