The Matrix came out and became a cultural phenomenon. It made us question our own reality and if the world we know is actually real.
Then the Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions came out and, while not being the greatest movies of all time, did make a fairly decent trilogy that ended in a satisfying way. The problem with all three movies was that they made a lot of money. And we all know what that means in Hollywood.
In 2021, Warner Brothers couldn’t leave well enough alone and gave us the Matrix Resurrections. This brought back Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, and some of the other cast from the first three movies. Well, apart from Lawrence Fishbourne and Hugo Weaving, who were replaced by, umm, other actors.
Matrix Resurrections was accused of being a cash-grab and, as we all know it was. Lana Wachowski wrote and directed it, mostly likely to troll Warner Brothers, much like Joe Dante did with Gremlins 2. If you’re going to make money squeezing my movie, I might as well get a paycheck out of it.
The Director
Drew Goddard is going to write and direct a new Matrix movie. He approached Warner with a pitch, which they seemed to like. Jesse Ehrman, Warner Brothers Motion Pictures President of Production, said:
“Drew came to Warner Bros. with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, by both honoring what Lana and Lilly began over 25-years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters.”
“The entire team at Warner Bros. Discovery is thrilled for Drew to be making this new Matrix film, adding his vision to the cinematic canon the Wachowskis’ spent a quarter of a century building here at the studio.”
So a passion project and definitely not another cash-grab to squeeze more money out of a once great sci-fi movie.
Goddard does have an impressive catalog when it comes to writing. His credits include Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Alias, Cloverfield, Cabin in the Woods, World War Z, The Martian, and Marvel’s The Daredevil TV series.
There is no news if any of the cast are back. Maybe Neo could come back and then die again?
