If you’re going to sit down to watch Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas you may be triggered… by a new trigger warning. AMC showed the gangster classic the other week, only to have the following disclaimer added:
“This film includes language and/or cultural stereotypes that are inconsistent with today’s standards of inclusion and tolerance and may offend some viewers.”
There was a Tweet from one viewer:
Now I’ve seen it all. AMC message before the classic film Goodfellas. pic.twitter.com/QxTXXz4tex

Apparently, Goodfellas shows some of these Italian Americans in a questionable light. I don’t want to shock some people, but it turns out the Italian Mafia did some things that weren’t very nice. Making a movie about the Mafia has highlighted some of these things. For shame Martin, for shame.
I’m not sure who the disclaimer is for. If you’re going to the cinema to see one of the best movies ever made, you’ve either seen it before or want to see one of Scorsese’s best movies. What are you thinking the R-rated movie is going to deal with? The good work the Mafia did to help inner-city youth or their care work for the elderly?
Some movies are made to trigger some people, that is the point of them. Schindler’s List would have been a very different movie if it was made for “modern audiences”. Auschwitz would have been a holiday camp, where a Black Nazi and a wheelchair-bound Jew find same-sex love through the wire fence.
Emotional Reaction
One of the points of watching a movie is to have your emotions touched. We watch comedies to laugh, action movies to make us excited, naughty movies to make us excited in a different way, horror movies to make us scared.
Something like Goodfellas shows us a world that most of us would rather not live in. Is it controversial? Of course, it is That is the point of it. I don’t ever want to meet Tommy DeVito, I mean, he’s funny, but not funny funny.
The sort of person that gets triggered by any kind of movie shouldn’t really leave the house. I would like to take someone like that to watch A Serbian Movie and do a Clockwork Orange on them.
