Cavill To VOLTRON

Nobody saw this coming! Henry Cavill has joined the live-action Voltron movie at Amazon MGM Studios. This is the studio where his Warhammer 40,000 project is currently in development.

Rawson Marshall Thurber (Red Notice, Skyscraper) is directing the movie, adapting the famous 1980s cartoon about five young pilots of the Robot Lions. As this is Japanese, of course, their mechanical vehicles form together to make a giant robot – Voltron.

Much like Japan’s Godzilla obsession is said to be as a result of World War II, specifically Hiroshima and Nagasaki, so the giant robot obsession is rumored to have its roots in Japanese global dominance in the robotics market, driven from their chronic post-World War II labor shortages.

Daniel Quinn-Toye was announced in one of the roles last week. It is not yet known exactly who Cavill could play in this project.

The series was a reworking of Toei Animation’s Beast King GoLion and Armored Fleet Dairugger XV into a World Events Production with ABC. The English language version ran in 1984 and 1985. It led to more animated TV shows, video games, and a toy line.

Thurber and Ellen Shanman are co-writing while Todd Lieberman, Bob Koplar and David Hoberman are producing. Voltron will shoot soon in Austrailia.

Cavill reunites with Guy Ritchie for the action thriller In the Grey, which will also star Jake Gyllenhaal and Eiza Gonzalez. Next year he will shoot Highlander and he continues to produce Warhammer 40,000.

This full dance card would seem to further reduce his chances of taking over as the next 007.
