Studio Wants More SPEED, MASTER & COMMANDER

A few months back, I revisited Speed for the first time in at least 15 years. It was mindblowing just how lean and direct it was. It belongs in that bracket of exceptionally good 1990s action movies where we didn’t realize, at the time, quite how good we had it. Con Air, The Rock, Bad Boys. Good times.

The least said about Speed 2: Cruise Control the better. All sorts of excitement were caused in movie fandom when Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock started making noises about reuniting for a third instalment. In the same interview with The Hollywood Reporter where 20th Century Studios head Steve Asbell revealed a secret new Predator project, he also referenced a potential Speed 3.

Previously, Sandra Bullock had said Hollywood may not be brave enough for a third film. His response:

“Hollywood is brave enough. We are brave enough. We are sitting by the phone. (Laughs) It is one of those last movies that we haven’t remade. And to really be a reason to come back, it’s got to be a great idea and an idea that excites (Bullock and Keanu Reeves).

Because that’d be the reason to see it. It’s obviously a really important title for us, but it’s not something we would handle lightly or just try to press them into service. They’d have to be a part of the development of that idea.”

He said that there are no plans for any more Kingsman movies and that Die Hard is now complete as a franchise, with nothing more coming. He said a Free Guy sequel is up to Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds. He was asked about perennial Outpost favorite (and still one of the greatest movies ever made) – Master and Commander: The Far Side Of The World.

He confirmed they have a script for a new installment, set earlier in the career of Captain Jack Aubrey.

“I’m trying so hard. It’s the first movie I worked on at Fox twenty years ago. We have a great script. It just needs the right director.”

Asbell also confirmed a follow-up to Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is targeting a 2027 release.
