We all know Wicked is going to be a nightmare. It will be everywhere, filling heads with its message of total freedom from consequences and accountability, and that you don’t need to work or overcome challenges to defy gravity, you only need to unlock the princess power that was inside you all along.
The soundtrack shall fill your waking hours, and your social media feeds will be rammed full of selfies from various trips to the movie theater, probably with some kind of endless stream of hashtags.
And this is only Part I. There is a Part II still to come!
Wicked does seem to be determined to somehow defeat itself, though. First of all, one of the stars attacked some big fans of the show over a perceived slight, demonstrating thin skin and an inherent victim mentality.
Now something even more hilarious has happened. Toy company Mattel has had to halt sales and recall some of its Wicked movie tie-in merchandise, and has had to issue an apology.
Why? The web address listed on the packaging for several character doll tie-ins wasn’t the official site – wickedmovie.com – for the film, but rather the website belonging to Wicked Pictures. That was formerly the home of Chasey Lain and Jenna Jameson, and producer of the XXX Parody series and titles such as Girls With Girls and Inglorious Bitches. I mean, so I am told…
Over the weekend, a mass panic operation swung into action by Mattel and retailers to strip the dolls from the shelves at Target, Walmart, Macy’s, Kohl’s, Best Buy, Amazon.com, and more. So, in the process, they have made these collector’s items. Amazing!
The statement from Mattel said they:
“…deeply regret this unfortunate error and are taking immediate action to remedy this”.
Wicked opens in theaters on November 22nd and is already on track for a huge opening. A huge opening? There is a joke here somewhere…
