Ali Sticking With BLADE

Blade has been the most troubled production in Marvel’s history. Numerous writers and directors have cycled through countless versions of the script. A script that, at one point, was rumored to have gone so far off piste that Blade was a supporting character in his own movie.

Luckily, somebody saw sense. Writers were fired, directors were removed, and that script was thrown in the trash for a page one re-write. The movie has been delayed so many times that many wondered how long lead actor Mahershala Ali would stick around for. Other projects would come calling. Scheduling or creative differences would occur.

Ali has confirmed he is fully committed to Blade. In an interview with EW yesterday, Ali says he’s happy with the direction of travel now they have a new script and director, with a new release date locked down.

“We’re working on it. That’s the best I could tell you. I’m really encouraged with the direction of the project. I think we’ll be back at it relatively soon… I’m sincerely encouraged in terms of where things are at and who’s on board and who’s leading the way as far as the writing of the script and the directing and all that. So that’s the extent of what I can tell you.”

Michael Starrbury (When They See Us) and True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto are working up the new script based on an initial draft by Logan writer Michael Green.

Well-regarded director Yann Demange (’71, Lovecraft Country) is on board. After dipping their toe in the adult water for Deadpool 3, Marvel has committed to making it R-rated. It is set to land in November 2025.
