Deadpool & Wolverine had things all their own way at the box office for the last couple of weeks. Records tumbled as it sailed past $1 billion mark, became the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, and the second highest-grossing movie of the year so far.
Now, entering its fifth week on release, it is de-throned at the box office by Alien: Romulus. This latest Alien installment has hit its marks domestically, and over-performed overseas.
According to Box Office Mojo this morning, it stands at $41.5 million domestically and $66.7 million overseas. The opening weekend total means that, on the top line at least, it has more than made back its rumored $80 million budget.
The only Alien franchise entry to make more in the opening weekend was Prometheus. Digging deeper into the numbers, it is being driven primarily by males over 25.
Deadpool & Wolverine didn’t fall far. It came in second with $29 million domestic. It sits at $1.142 billion globally to date.
Blake Lively’s It Ends with Us was third with $24 million in its second weekend. Twisters & a re-release of Coraline make up the rest of the top five.
Lower down, Despicable Me 4 is slowing after a decent run, Trap is still rattling around and Inside Out 2 is just two days out from its PVOD release. Borderlands cratered hard and barely dented the top ten.
There is a pretty lean few weeks ahead, with only The Crow remake and Channing Tatum’s Blink Twice standing out.
