The only really stand-out small-screen successes of this new era of Star Wars are the first two seasons of The Mandalorian, and season one of Andor. The latter was successful because it had a sense of scale while, at the same time, slowing down and telling a more mature story.
Long scenes of dialogue, delivered by good actors being allowed to work with properly written characters, playing out against the backdrop of the rise of the totalitarian Empire, worked well as we finally got some Star Wars for grown-ups.
You know, the people who made it such a success in the first place with 40-years of fandom? Well. Bad news everyone…
Disney+ has just issued a press release listing Star Wars releases in 2024. In line with their new strategy of slowing down the tsunami of content and not devaluing their major brands with four or five releases a year, it seems Andor may be moving out. Only Skeleton Crew and The Acolyte are on the list for next year.
Andor was shut down by the strikes at almost the exact half-way point. Skeleton Crew and The Acolyte were both wrapped before the strikes hit.
Filming on Andor is more complex, as it uses a plethora of real-world locations rather than being almost exclusively shot on The Volume high-tech stage. It was already expected to take a whole year, plus nearly a year of post-production before it was halted by the strikes mid-way.
Prior to the strikes, the plan was for an August / September 2024 release. It is now looking like that will not happen, and it will join Season 4 of The Mandalorian in a 2025 release window.
