No matter what you think of the current crop of superhero movies, one thing we all seem to agree on is that Hayley Atwell is rather magnificent. Her final scene in Avengers: Endgame as Peggy Carter, with Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers, was also about as pitch-perfect a comic book ending as you could imagine. Both heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time.
With the new movie, Avengers: Doomsday, due to feature Chris Evans returning as Captain America it seems the time is now right for the return of Agent Carter, too.
A report in Deadline says that there was an idea for a standalone feature to star the two characters. Something in the storyline of Avengers: Doomsday has apparently made it possible for them to return to the current MCU.
Atwell played the role across two Captain America films, and the third featured Carter’s funeral after she passed away from Alzheimer’s. She also appeared in two Avengers movies, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and Ant-Man.
Period set Agent Carter got great reviews, but seemed to be the victim on ABC and Disney not really knowing what to do with their MCU spin-offs.
Anthony and Joe Russo are returning to direct Avengers: Doomsday, and will have worked with Atwell on many of her MCU movies. Filming starts on the new Avengers movie in the new year.
In the meantime, Atwell reprises her role from Dead Reckoning in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.
