AVATAR 4 & 5 Still A Go?

It seems incredible that it could even be in doubt, after the three previous Avatar movies all grossed $2.9 billion, $2.3 billion, and $1.5 billion. The concern is the costs, with that box office curve only going one way. That is, however, against the backdrop of a general decline in box office and the rise of streaming. Avatar: Fire & Ash is still the 3rd highest growing movie of 2025 worldwide and a member of the $1 billion+ club.

James Cameron gave an interview at the Saturn Awards a few weeks ago, where he confirmed they are not yet greenlit, but it is looking likely. Story-wise, it is known that the final two movies are a joint proposition. Either they both get made, or neither of them does.

Now, producer Rae Sanchini has given an interview to Inverse and said that while they await an official greenlight, they are still moving forward with them:

“Right now we’re figuring out the schedule. We’re working hard on it right now, budgeting, scheduling, planning, building out our new pipeline for them. As far as we’re concerned, we’re full speed ahead.”

Speaking of the budget, Sanchini seemed to indicate that they are in a space where they can re-use most of the technology now that the investment has been made by the first three movies, saying they are:

“….really moving into a more generally accessible platform…”

Meanwhile, Avatar: Fire and Ash is now available on digital, which reminds me I still haven’t seen it or, indeed, the second one.
