The Oscar nominations were announced earlier this week, and immediately it was noted that despite nominations for Barbie, including for Ryan Gosling, Margot Robbie as Best Actress and Greta Gerwig as Best Director were not included in the nods.
The film grabbed eight nominations overall, making it the fourth-most nominated movie at the awards. As the movie has been something of a rallying point for the noisy, yet ultimately lazy activism that is a pox on our society these days, it was predictable that this would cause a backlash on, where else, social media.
First out of the blocks was everyone’s favorite runner-up, Hilary Clinton. She posted on X:
“Greta & Margot, While it can sting to win the box office but not take home the gold, your millions of fans love you. You’re both so much more than Kenough.”
Guess she must just think it’s their turn or something. The Academy had better watch their step. They never know what they might get winging their way:
Barbie co-stars and Oscar nominees Gosling and Ferrera have also spoken out. Fellow co-stars Simu Liu, Ncuti Gatwa, Nicola Coughlan, composer Mark Ronson, and others also had something to say.
Robbie and Gerwig themselves have so far not commented. This year’s Oscar winners will be announced on March 10th.
