Box Office Powerhouses Punch KARATE KID

Sony’s Karate Kid: Legends found itself coming up against the one-two combo of Lilo & Stitch and Mission: Impossible at the box office. It couldn’t pull a special karate move out of the bag this time. It came in slightly below expectations with a final number of around $21 million domestic.

It grabbed another $26 million overseas for a $47 million weekend. The movie was very modestly budgeted at around $45 million so it will still likely break even. It has also been getting some high audience scores, so it may have some legs.

The box office is, instead, predictably, still dominated by Lilo & Stitch and Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.

Disney’s live-action remake is at $63 million domestically on BoxOfficeMojo, with a second weekend drop of 57%. Internationally, it is going great, with another $113.1 million and a minuscule drop of under 30%. $611 million so far and still running.

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is also sticking, with a 33% drop in week 2 on release. Another $27.3 million domestic and $76.1 million overseas put it at $354 million. The outlook is murkier for M:I thought, as the costs were legendarily high. The last movie lost money, and this one still could.

Final Destination Bloodlines proves what we have been saying all along about movie budgets, just like Karate Kid: Legends a lower budget brings rewards. It cost $50 million and so far has made $229 million worldwide. It is party time for that team at Warner Bros.

A24’s Bring Her Back opened in fifth with $7.1 million. This is R-rated and said to be a gore-fest, so that’s a decent haul.

Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme is on a very, very, very limited release (six screens!) and pulled in nearly $600k. It could go large when it opens wide next weekend if it finds a shred of mainstream appeal.
