CLIFFHANGER Reboot In Trouble?

A report in Variety says that the new Cliffhanger reboot, already filmed and in the can, could be in trouble due to cashflow issues at the distributor, Row K Entertainment.

Jaume Collet-Serra (The Shallows) directed from a story by Ana Lily Amirpour (The Bad Batch). Pierce Brosnan plays seasoned mountaineer Ray Cooper, who operates a luxury chalet in the Dolomites with daughter Sydney. During a weekend trip with a billionaire’s son, they are targeted by a gang of kidnappers. His other daughter, Naomi (James), still haunted by a past climbing accident, witnesses the attack and escapes. To save her family, she must confront her fears and fight for survival.

The report says the company has faced “work stoppages and legal threats” as the cashflow splutters. Even more interesting is a source for the article saying that Row K didn’t formally close the distribution deal, meaning another distributor could swoop in and take Cliffhanger out from under their noses.

Row K has denied this, releasing a statement:

“Row K is well-capitalized, continues to support its existing projects, and is focused on long-term, sustainable growth with a clear emphasis on commerciality.”

Cliffhanger is set for a a 3,000-screen U.S. theatrical release in August, so this could be a big deal if it goes wobbly, leaving screens open with no movie, or a new distributor racing to take over these bookings.
