Cobra Kai remains a delight. The first two seasons were an incredible surprise. We all tuned in expecting the absolute worst, because we are cynical old f*cks and because we have vast experience of our childhoods being abused by Hollywood, like a twink at a director’s pool party.
Instead, we got a funny, moving, and dramatic continuation that gave us exactly what we wanted. Believable, likable versions of our favorite characters, 30+ years later. Character development, with even the old hands being given plenty of growth. Old plot points weaved in, Easter eggs dropped with a great sense of fun, and just the right amount of nostalgia making it feel like you were being welcomed back to the universe rather than being resented simply for existing.
It was, basically, the complete reversal of everything Star Wars has done wrong since it returned. We ate it up. The full season drops made Cobra Kai one of the most binged shows on Netflix.
Any minor complaints over the cast growing too large, and too much focus on the kids in later seasons, don’t stop it from still being some of the most fun you can have in front of your TV right now. Yet, all good things must come to an end. The upcoming sixth season will be the last.
Now co-creator Hayden Schlossberg has confirmed a few details about the season. First of all, he confirmed on X that the final run will still consist of ten episodes, as per the previous seasons. However the total runtime of the season will be the longest to date, so the episodes will be longer than usual.
He also confirms the last episode is going to be a long one. Feature length finale? Yes please!
Filming for the new season is expected to begin in the next few days. According to Schlossberg a new dojo name will be revealed in the very first episode, and every effort is being made to get this new season out in 2024.
The new run of Cobra Kai has cast C.S. Lee as Master Kim Sun-Yung, grandfather of Kim Da-Eun from season 5. Fan speculation is that the major driver of this season will be the international, invitational tournament mentioned in season 5. Silver may be heading for jail, but Kreese is still out there.
