28 Years Later starts production shortly, so expect a raft of casting information over the next few weeks. Very little is known about the sequel, and we still don’t know for sure if Cillian Murphy will return.
He hinted he could be interested, but he’s now an Oscar winner and no doubt has a very full schedule. He is listed as an Executive Producer on the movie.
We know Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland are reuniting for this follow-up. The plot specifics are not known. We can safely assume that the Rage Virus will come into play somehow, but other than that… nothing.
One rumor out there, via scooper DanielRPK, is news that Killing Eve and Free Guy actress Jodie Comer is in talks to join the cast.
28 Years Later is planned as the first in a trilogy of movies at Sony Pictures and the first one has a $60 million budget.
Comer’s latest project is with Austin Butler and Tom Hardy, The Bikeriders.
28 Days Later was a massive financial success. It was made on a budget of just £5 million and then made more than that back in the UK alone. When it landed in the US it became a surprise hit, pulling in over $45 million despite a limited release at fewer than 1,500 screens. It made $90 million overall worldwide.
Critical views of the film were positive, with Rotten Tomatoes still holding it at 87%.
Alongside the Resident Evil video game franchise, 28 Days Later is credited with restarting the zombie genre, and leading directory to Shaun of the Dead (2004) and Zack Snyder’s Dawn Of The Dead remake.
