There is a constantly growing suspicion that Tom Cruise and his Mission: Impossible team simply have a Big Book Of Bond on hand. Whenever they need inspiration, they flick through it to see what sequences, stunts, and ideas they can take, and then just make bigger.
From hanging on to the outside of a plane (Octopussy), through HALO jumps (Tomorrow Never Dies), to stylized opera house sequences (Quantum Of Solace), it seems Ethan Hunt will just do that, but more recently.
So, of course, where Bond has gone then Cruise must follow and the next example is the Olympics. Now the theory cannot be denied.
After the whole world gasped in surprise, as Danny Boyle managed to get the actual bloody Queen to appear alongside Daniel Craig in a Bond skit to kick off the London 2012 Olympic’s opening ceremony, so Cruise will play a part in the closing ceremony of this Olympics.
It is customary that the closing ceremony contains some kind of handover to the next host city, and this is where Cruise will come in.
According to a report in TMZ, Cruise’s involvement will be in a sequence to show the handoff to 2028 host Los Angeles.
Cruise has reportedly filmed stunts in both cities as part of a pre-taped segment for the handoff in which Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo will pass the Olympic flag to L.A. mayor Karen Bass via Cruise rappelling down the Stade de France in Paris, travel by plane to Los Angeles, and ending up at the famous Hollywood Hills sign.
Cruise has been continuing to get a Hollywood studio to pay for his extreme sports addiction for the eighth time and fitted this in while filming Mission: Impossible 8 all over Europe.
