Get ready to set your face to ‘stun’ as there is breaking news. Ncuti Gatwa has quit as Doctor Who, only after two seasons. I’m sorry to say that he plans to head to Hollywood to carry out a number of new projects.
Gatwa has been The Doctor since 2023 and has already filmed an exit scene. There is talk that the show might be taken off air for good. The BBC has told WalesOnline:
“Doctor Who has not been shelved. The decision on season 3 will be made after season 2 airs. The deal with Disney+ was for 26 episodes – and exactly half of those still have to transmit.”
“And as for the rest, we never comment on the Doctor and future storylines.”
According to reports, Gatwa wanted to cut his losses early, worried that his time on Dr Who would stem his career. An insider has said:
“Ncuti doesn’t want to be tied to the series beyond this and plans to relocate to Los Angeles with several Hollywood projects standing by for him.”
“His team also see a lot of fan backlash from the series, and don’t want the perception of him still being The Doctor to get in the way of any future work.”
They went on to say:
“The show has been poorly managed in recent years and there’s a lot of people who’ve been working on this show for years and now being cast aside due to poor leadership. People warned some episodes were getting too caught up on an agenda rather than telling a story and those people got shouted down, ignored.”
What’s that expression about Sherlock Holmes and excrement? Doctor Who has been consistently losing viewers for the past few years. Instead of telling stories, they have been preaching at the audience.
It’s not like Gatwa hasn’t leaned into the Culture Wars and caused some problems of his own. We all need to take and moment and think of the dozens of fans who will be upset Gatwa is leaving Doctor Who.
