Of all the characters who seemed to be bowing out of the MCU with Avengers: Endgame, Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark seemed to have the most final of finales. From the moment he talked about how lucky the Stark family had been during The Blip, and then reluctantly returned to the Avengers fold with the master plan, it seemed the writing was on the wall for him.
The triumphant conclusion that was Infinity War and Endgame together needed a heroic sacrifice, and he was always a prime candidate. Still didn’t mean that the audience wasn’t full of grown men suddenly struggling with their hay fever.
However, this is the world of comic books, and nobody is ever really gone. Downey Jr. sat down with Jodie Foster (yes, that Jodie Foster) for an interview and openly said he’s getting more open to a comeback as Tony Stark.
Asked by Foster about the possibility of going back to the Tony Stark role, he says:
“It’s just crazily in my DNA. Probably the most like-me character I’ve ever played, even though he’s way cooler than I am. I’ve become surprisingly open-minded to the idea.”
Avengers: Secret Wars will be here in the second half of the decade, and it is quite clear that an Avengers team-up of Shang-Chi, Blade, and the Eternals under the leadership of Captain Marvel certainly isn’t going to cut it with audiences.
Find a way to reunite the surviving OG Avengers, maybe with a multiverse Tony and snatching Cap out of his comfortable retirement, and you might have another hit on your hands.
