Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo & Juliet will always remain a classic take on Shakespeare’s tragic love story. I had it on LaserDisc, with a kick-ass sound system, and it was a treat to watch.
Someone who will have a completely different take on Romeo & Juliet is Robert Eggers. Don’t get me wrong, I love the guy. His movies, The Witch, The Lighthouse, The Northman, and Nosferatu, all have their own sense of style.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Eggers will produce and direct a new version of Romeo & Juliet. In line with some of Eggers’ other movies, the script will be in ye old English.
“Romeo, Romeo, where art thou, init bruv!”
The story follows two feuding families, the Capulets and Montagues, in Verona, Italy. Why would they be talking in ye old English then?
It’s certainly interesting, as I said, Eggers has a style about him, but it’s been more focused on horror; although I use that term loosely for The Lighthouse or The Northman. However, Eggers taking on Shakespeare wouldn’t have been on my bingo card for movies.
As we know, Eggers newest movie, Werwulf, is in post-production and due out in December. He has said himself that it’s the darkest thing he’s ever written. Personally, I’m interested in seeing Werwulf, because it’s Eggers; the guy gets a pass from me.
What are your thoughts on him taking on Romeo & Juliet?
