FAST & FURIOUS To Television

Remember kids, if one is good, more must be better, and infinite is fantastic because you can talk about cross-channel, multi-media shared universes in boardrooms, until it all comes crashing down around your ears in a blaze of over-saturated audience apathy. It’s the Hollywood way! Just like this – Fast & Furious television.

A franchise made for the kind of people who take wrestling just a little bit too seriously, and find the plot of The Very Hungry Caterpillar challenging, the movies have somehow grossed more than $7 billion at the box office. So humanity has not earned a respite from fambly-related denial of basic physics just yet. Streaming service Peacock has announced plans for at least one TV series set within the Fast & Furious universe.

There might be even more coming, as Vin Diesel appeared at NBCUniversal’s upfront at Radio City Music Hall in New York City and said:

“For the last decade, we have realised that the fans have wanted more. They wanted us to expand the legacy characters, their stories. And for the last decade, the desire has been for us to enter the TV space. The news that I have here today is that Peacock is launching four shows from the Fast and Furious universe.”

I love how every time he talks about the silly car movies, he makes it sound as important as announcing a cure for cancer. As it typical with the franchise, it seems some of this might be Vin Diesel getting ahead of himself again, as The Hollywood Reporter followed the comment up with their source at Peacock, who said there is only one in development.

Oh Vin, will you ever learn?

What is known is that Mike Daniels and Wolfe Coleman are co-showrunners, and the project is set up at Universal Television. Diesel will executive produce, because of course, as will Sam Vincent, Neal Moritz, Pavun Shetty, Jeff Kirschenbaum, and Chris Morgan.

Wake me up when there is more news on the Knight Rider reboot.
