Frodo and Gandalf to return in THE HUNT FOR GOLLUM?

Elijah Wood has stoked rumours of a return as Frodo Baggins in the upcoming The Lord of the Rings midquel The Hunt for Gollum.

The Hunt for Gollum takes place between Bilbo’s 111th birthday party and Frodo leaving the Shire with the One Ring in The Fellowship of the Ring. The timeline between these events is left vague in the movie, but in the book it is 17 YEARS!

The Hunt for Gollum tells the story of Gandalf sending Aragorn to find Gollum before Sauron’s forces catch up to him. Gandalf fears what Gollum might reveal to Sauron about the One Ring. The story is based on material contained in Tolkien’s appendices and has already been made into a 39-minute fan film, which can be found here:

Andy Serkis will direct, as well as reprising his role as Gollum. Original screenwriters Philippa Boyens and Fran Walsh are listed as screenwriters (along with a few others).

Ian Mckellen has already confirmed his return as Gandalf. At a fan event in London, he teased the return of Frodo too.

There’s a character in the movie called Frodo and another character called Gandalf, and apart from that, my lips are sealed.

At a recent panel at FAN expo, New Orleans, Elijah Wood did little to dispel the rumours.

I can neither confirm nor deny. Listen, a wizard is to be trusted. Aside from any of that, I’m not really allowed to confirm.

Not allowed to confirm? By who? That must mean you’re under contract. How is that not a confirmation?

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is scheduled for release on December 17, 2027.
