Gunn & Safran Extended At DC

A few weeks ago, we all got to point and laugh at certain corners of the internet who were absolutely convinced that the entire DCU was going to be thrown in the bin and Zack Snyder was going to triumphantly return, relaunching his DCEU, bringing back Cavill as Superman, and all the rest of the crew.

Then, when Netflix emerged as the most likely successful bidder for Warner Bros. their excitement reached fever pitch. “See!” they were all over the internet yelling, while jumping up and down excitedly and holding their winkies to stop some pee from coming out, “We told you so!”

This was it, then. The end of DC Studios chiefs James Gunn and Peter Safran. Except it isn’t.

In a feature piece for Bloomberg, it has been revealed that their contracts were originally for four years and due to end in October 2026, and that contract has now been extended to 2027.

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav said in the piece:

“The work of James and Peter, their creative vision, it’s compelling and a great economic return. There’s no storytelling content that we have that provides a bigger palette than DC, and there’s nobody around right now who can tell these stories with the same imagination and excitement.”

The feature confirms that corporate activity at the parent company has no impact on their current plans, and that theatrical releases remain the focus, referring to the movies as “communal experiences” for “big spectacle films.”

The trailer for the next entry in the DCU, Supergirl, is expected to land this week, with Thursday pegged as the most likely day. In advance of this, DC Studios dropped the briefest of pre-teasers over the weekend:
