According to a report in Deadline, Chris Hemsworth is in talks to star in the as-yet-untitled Transformers & GI Joe crossover event movie currently in the works at Paramount Pictures and Hasbro.
Hemsworth is no stranger to the world of robots in disguise, being of a certain age and also providing the voice of Optimus Prime in the animated Transformers One. The trailer might have seemed suspect to us, but test screening results for that were rumored to be off the charts.
The entry of GI Joe into the world of Transformers was teased in the ending scene from Transformers: Rise of the Beasts late last year. In case you haven’t seen it:
Steven Caple Jr.’s Transformers: Rise of the Beasts pulled in $439 million last summer. That put it ahead of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny on $384 million. I don’t think I have seen a Transformers movie since that one with the robot dog having balls and the hilariously racist robot cassette players, but clearly there is still life in this franchise yet.
G.I. Joe and Transformers last teamed up in a well-received Marvel comic books. The four-issue limited series from 1986 was set in the contemporary Transformers Generation 1 continuity. It followed the Transformers, G.I. Joe, and Cobra as they struggle for control of Power Station Alpha. This was a mobile nuclear power plant that could beam energy across the globe.
The Decepticons and Cobra both want it, and briefly ally themselves to steal it from the United States of America… until Cobra’s agents discover that Shockwave has plans for the station that will bring about the destruction of the Earth itself.
Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Mark Vahradian, Michael Bay, Tom DeSanto & Don Murphy will produce this crossover, while Steven Spielberg will executive produce.
Unbelievably, Transformers and G.I. Joe have grossed a lifetime total of over $6 billion.
