Home Alone, and the sequel Home Alone 2: Lost In New York, remain in the running for “timeless classic” status. Somehow they are endlessly rewatchable, with each new generation of parents enjoying introducing them to their own children.
For years, there have been rumors of some kind of revival featuring a now-adult Macaulay Culkin returning to his most famous role. Culkin was recently spotted on the Disney lot, and this set all the hares running again around the possibility that the project was finally nearing reality.
According to scooper Matt Belloni on The Town podcast “Disney is salivating” over the project.
Culkin has resisted the call to return for thirty years, but apparently Disney are pulling out all the stops and actively courting the actor. What is different this time? According to the scooper, Culkin himself has already developed a specific idea for a new film.
People who have heard the pitch say it is a really good idea and this has really got Disney engaged. 45 year old Culkin confirmed last year that he wasn’t against the idea of returning, but that things had to be perfect or they risked not honoring the original two movies.
The rumor at the time was that Culkin would be the home invader, trying to get into his own house that he has been locked out of by his own, estranged children.
Culkin did not appear in any of the sequels post the second installment, and eventually the Home Alone franchise slid into direct-to-VHS/DVD territory before dying. No word yet on director Chris Columbus potentially returning.
