Indie Trailer: TWO TO ONE

We love an Indie Movie at LMO, so we were excited when we were sent a trailer for a German comedy, Two to One. Yes, Germans do have a sense of humour, and the trailer does look like a fun movie.

Two to One stars Sandra Huller, Mr Reimelt, Ronald Zehrfeld, Ursula Werner, Peter Kurth, Martin Brambach and Uwe Preuss. Natja Brunckhorst writes and directs. The story is:

A family in East Germany finds millions in soon-to-be-worthless East German currency during 1990’s reunification, and take what they can carry.

That’s an interesting idea, you find a stack of money, that’s about to become useless. How do you spend it without giving away that suddenly you’re a capitalist? All in three days as well.

The fall of the Berlin Wall was a major political event. In Two to One, they look at the lighter side of it. The fall of the wall meant that the money in the East was just going to be useless. Some people saw it as a shame and took the opportunity, as this is based on a true story.

Director, Brunckhorst, said that capturing the authenticity of 1990s East Germany had a huge impact on Two to One. Most of the cast came from the East, and they filmed mostly in genuine locations from the old East. Brunckhorst said:

“I didn’t want to use clichés, not even visually, but I wanted to explore authenticity. We only used clothes from the period, and for filming we decided: No jokes about clothes! We didn’t want to make fun of anyone and avoid anyone making fun of someone else just because of what they were wearing. And that worked very well.”

“I think it’s a film that leaves me in a good mood and still takes something away from it. For me, TWO TO ONE has something archaically timeless about it.”

In Germany, the movie has been a big hit, but then again, it makes sense since it’s a ‘local’ film. It recently played at the Glasgow Film Festival and Borderlines Film Festival, drawing packed and happy audiences.

Two to One will be in selected cinemas on the 2nd of May.
