Late Night With The Devil is getting very strong reviews. The independent horror movie landed in US theaters yesterday, and with over 100 reviews counted, the film is at 96% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The movie, almost Gonzo-style, is set during a fictional talk show from the 1970s. David Dastmalchian (Dune) stars as Jack Delroy, the host who introduces his guests. They are a parapsychologist and her subject – the teen survivor of a Satanic church’s mass suicide. As events on the show unfold, a Satanic incident takes place during the Halloween broadcast.
So far, so creepy. However, it seems Hollywood talent has decided to uniformly hold the line against the use of A.I. in any form at all. So Late Night With The Devil found itself attracting criticm for the use of A.I. to create three title cards for the production.
A backlash followed, and writer/directors Colin and Cameron Cairnes had to come out with a statement in Variety:
“In conjunction with our amazing graphics and production design team, all of whom worked tirelessly to give this film the 70s aesthetic we had always imagined, we experimented with AI for three still images which we edited further and ultimately appear as very brief interstitials in the film.
We feel incredibly fortunate to have had such a talented and passionate cast, crew and producing team to go above and beyond to help bring this film to life. We can’t wait.”
Even Dastmalchian got involved, taking his cue from the rest of Hollywood talent regarding A.I.:
“The only thing that makes me sad is that we had such an awesome graphics design team and all the artists were working on making this film so perfect, so it makes me sad that that’s a story that’s getting attention. But I get it.”
