The Mission: Impossible franchise felt like it stalled out toward the end, never hitting the heights of the 4th to 6th movie run again. The gargantuan budgets and repetitive reliance on the lead star’s extreme sports addiction didn’t help.
So it felt the right decision to end the franchise with Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, which definitely seemed to provide a conclusion to Ethan Hunt’s time with the IMF.
So it was something of a surprise when, over the last two days, a rumor gained traction across the movie internet that Mission: Impossible 9 was in the works.

The rumor came from celebrity gossip outlet DeuxMoi, and claimed that Hamnet and Eternals filmmaker Chloé Zhao was being courted by Cruise to be involved.
Not only were they talking, but they had already workshopped a treatment.
The report came from an anonymous tip, so it was already highly suspect.
Now, a more reliable source has shot these rumors down. The InSneider says the rumors are not true and the sources are not legitimate.
One day, Cruise may return to the role in the form of a semi-legacy sequel or in a passing of the baton story, but it’s not happening soon.
For now, the franchise is over.
Both Dead Reckoning and The Final Reckoning underperformed Fallout while costing significantly more. The final instalment was one of the most expensive movies ever made, not helped by COVID delays and reshoots.
