Dev Patel is the Monkey Man, a man out for revenge in the brutal second trailer. I have to say, that looks pretty badass. Patel has always come over as a little nice, but he’s not here.
The story of Monkey Man is:
An anonymous young man unleashes a campaign of vengeance against the corrupt leaders who murdered his mother and continue to systemically victimize the poor and powerless.
OK, so it’s not exactly original, but it’s about how it’s done. The movie stars Patel, Sharlto Copley, Pitobash, Sobhita Dhulipala, Adithi Kalkunte and Sikandar Kher. Patel is making his directorial debut with Monkey Man. He is also serving as a writer, along with Paul Angunawela and John Collee.
Angunawela is known for directing episodes of Keith Lemon. If you don’t know who that is, I envy you. He’s a character on British TV that’s about as funny as a spiked baseball bat to the nether regions. An odd choice as a writer, as Monkey Man looks deadly serious.
Collee on the other hand is known for penning movies like Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. That makes things more interesting. Jordan Peele is one of the producers, which is a big name to have behind you. The movie premiered at the SXSW Festival and earned Patel a long-standing ovation that brought him to tears.
The Monkey Man himself is based on a legend called Hanuman, an icon embodying strength and courage. He also seems to embody kicking the living snot out of people.
Monkey Man will be in theatres on 5th April. I’m up for it, how about you?
