This latest series was ordered in early 2022 from The Goldbergs creator Adam F. Goldberg, working alongside Muppets pros Bill Barretta and Jeff Yorkes as Executive Producers.
The show followed the old Muppet house band Electric Mayhem as they struggled to navigate the current music scene. It starred Lilly Singh as Nora, their A&R executive tasked with managing Dr. Teeth, Floyd Pepper, Janie, Zoot, Lips, and Animal.
Tahj Mowry, Saara Chaudry, and Anders Holm also starred. Muppets Now was also cancelled at Disney+, as was a potential third film in the rebooted movie franchise.
The Muppets originated in the short-form television series Sam and Friends, which aired on WRC-TV and then in syndication from 1955 to 1961. This led to advertising appearances and late-night talk show slots, before Sesame Street appearances.
They gained international recognition with The Muppet Show (1976–1981), which would go on to receive four Primetime Emmy Award wins and 21 nominations during its five-year run. This introduced their absurdist, burlesque, and self-referential style of variety-sketch comedy to the whole world.
The franchise was acquired by the Walt Disney Company in 2004.
