It has only taken them nearly seven years, but a new Star Wars movie project is finally underway. Star Wars on the big screen has been in limbo since The Rise Of Skywalker squelched itself into theaters like a wet fart back in 2020. Shortly after that, the entire world got sick and everything shut down. Sometimes the universe gives you a sign. Can Star Wars: Starfighter recapture some magic?
Last week was the official start of production on the Shawn Levy-directed Star Wars effort. Now Lucasfilm has released the first photo from the set and unveiled the co-star, a young Irish actor called Flynn Gray. The image was taken by Ed Miller.
With the start of production, the rest of the cast has also been revealed. Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams all join the cast. Also included is 2 Fast 2 Furious star Eva Mendes, who is the wife of lead actor Ryan Gosling in real life. The rumor is that she will also be his wife in the movie.
The actress and model retired from films a decade ago.
Fans of British sitcom The Inbetweeners will also see Simon Bird in the cast list.
The film is frequently referred to as an all-new standalone adventure and entirely original story set in a period of time never before explored in Star Wars. Jonathan Tropper has written the script.
In a statement to celebrate the start of filming, Levy said:

From the day Kathy Kennedy called me up, inviting me to develop an original adventure in this incredible Star Wars galaxy, this experience has been a dream come true, creatively and personally. To join this storytelling galaxy with such brilliant collaborators onscreen and off, is the thrill of a lifetime.”
Star Wars: Starfighter will be released in theaters on May 28th, 2027.
