A big rumor has started spreading online. Any veracity to it? Who knows, this is the internet! Speculation is fun, though. The rumor is that the HBO mega-series adaption of the Harry Potter books is circling Cillian Murphy for the Voldermort role.
This would be facing off against fellow Oscar winner Mark Rylance as Dumbedore.
While out promoting The Return on Watch What Happens Live, previous Voldermort Ralph Fiennes was asked about this rumor and responded:
“Cillian is a fantastic actor. I actually think that’s a wonderful suggestion. I would be all in favor of Cillian. Yeah.”
Fiennes played the role in all of the characters appearances as an adult, with the exception of the first instalment when Voldermort appeared more as an apparition or still forming.
The rumor says that Warner Bros. Television is talking to Murphy about Voldermort, but no formal negotiations are happening yet. How do you lock an Oscar winner into a seven-year series commitment? With a huge sack of cash, we imagine. That said, appearances are limited in the first few seasons and only really ramps up as the later books are adapted.
Variety reports that the series is expected to debut in 2027.
