According to a report in Deadline, Christopher Nolan is spinning up his next project right now and it will be at Universal. He fell out with his traditional home of Warner Bros. over their COVID release strategy and moved to Universal for Oppenheimer.
That movie made major bank and won awards galore, so he is sticking with the formula for a second outing.
The report says Matt Damon is likely to star, marking his third time working with Nolan following Interstellar and Oppenheimer. Shooting will start in the New Year for a July 17th, 2026 release. This is the same sort of release slot that many of his movies have opened in. As is now traditional for Nolan, it will be shot in IMAX.
Nolan will be directing from a script he wrote, completing it back in March. His regular producing partner Emma Thomas is also on board.
He had previously said that his next project might be something a little lighter in tone than Oppenheimer and Dunkirk. So does this mean it is his long-standing passion project, an adaption of the famous British TV show The Prisoner?
Nolan was also having talks with the Bond producers about directing the next installment in that franchise, but Nolan’s requirements over levels of control were always likely to outstrip the willingness of producers of a franchise like Bond, and with Amazon MGM Studios becoming a major force in filmmaking backed by Bezoz money, MGMs days of needing partners like Universal or Sony are probably over.
So what exactly is Nolan working on?
